Ferry, interesting.. Happy new year ! Colorado is beautiful.
There is a train tunnel though right? I suppose that was probably a more expensive train. Does the London Underground meet up with the Ferry when you reach the UK? I don’t have a good sense of distance there.
There is the Channel Tunnel (Chunnel) from Paris to London direct – but it was all sold out, incredably expensive, and they were deterring people (aggressively, via major fare costs – $359 one way) from riding it due to recent “terrorism” issues – whatever that means. It was odd, frustrating, and would have been very expensive. Apparently it also does poorly when there’s snow.. I guess only 20 minutes of it is in the tunnel.
They offer a discounted fare of 75€ with a Railpass, but those sell out even sooner than the other fares.
The total cost via ferry was..
Train (TGV + Regional): 3€ w/ railpass
Ferry from Calais to Dover: 16€
Taxi from middle of no where (ghost town) France to Calais because I got off a stop too soon: 35€ (ouch)
Train from Dover to London: 18 GBP
So, if I had reserved eary then it would have about worked out on Eurostar, but this wasn’t that much more expensive – but it was a whole lot longer. Basically 12 hours, the ferries were hugely delayed, and it’s just a slower route all around. But I’m here! And I got to read, so that works out.
Re: Ferry / Underground access – as I mentioned above there’s a train (regional) involved, here’s the distance on a map (about 70 miles, 1 hour on an express train, 2 on a regional that I ended up on)

That sucks. When I took it I think it was like.. 20 bucks or something because I already had a railpass, I just had to pay a bit extra. I thought the Eurostar was faster than TGV but maybe I was confusing that with the german ICE. Anyways… too bad about burning a day :-/. At least you got to see a lot out the window!
Yes..Ferry travel costs less than other modes travel..
yes Calais Dover, Ferry travel costs less than other modes travel, i agree with you
I have to say I’m amazed that I’ve gotten comments from both of the ferry lines I took on this trip! How did you find my blog?
