I’m at Top Pot Doughnuts on Capitol Hill, beginning to sort through the remainder of my photos (everything after Edinburgh – nearly 900 to go through) and have been unproductive because of a neat book I came across on the shelf near where I decided to sit – it’s called Lands and Peoples – British Isles and Western Europe, published in 1963 and it has a great story about the Scottish Highlands along with some fun pictures, many of areas I saw on my trip. It’s fun to read about the area in the perspective of 1963 – before Scotland held its own modern day parliament for example. Quite a fun find! The books at Top Pot aren’t necessarily just for decoration.

Now maybe I’ll get around to going through some more of my photos, I hope to get them uploaded soon!

Dublin’s been fun, the weather’s better here so it’s much nicer to walk around than elsewhere! (Belfast was fine too it seemed)

I’ve gotten to the Trinity College and National Museum of Ireland, both of which are really worthwhile – albeit the Book of Kells exhibit at Trinity is a bit pricey, seeing the old library (and the books themselves) was worthwhile. The National museum has lots of great antiquities covering all periods of Irish history – with some things from as far back as 7000 BC.

I visited the Guinness storehouse and the Old Jameson distillery – the Guinness storehouse is very worthwhile and really well done – it’s a huge exhibit and it’s clear they’ve put a ton of money in to it. The Jameson tour wasn’t as good – and it cost more!

I ran in to a friend Hugo from Montreal at the Guinness storehouse – we knew we were both in Dublin but communicating was a bit tricky, fun to run in to him there! We did the Jameson tour after and met a local friend of his afterwards.

I made it to Kilmainham Hospitol where the Irish Museum of Modern Art is – and that was pretty interesting, unfortunately I didn’t make it to Kilmainham Gaol before it closed – I really wanted to see it, but it closed at 4:30, earlier than I thought I had read. It’s an old prison, where people from the 1916 rebellion were kept and some executed. Lots of neat architecture, and it’s a Panopticon, which I’ve wanted to see for a while. That’s a design such that the guards can overseen every part of the prison, and all of the inmates without them knowing they are being observed.

So, now I’ll be heading home tomorrow – my flight leaves at 9:10 and I should be back in Seattle just after 6PM.

I haven’t uploaded pictures in a while – hopefully I’ll get some uploaded tonight, but it may not be until I’m back until they’re all uploaded.

It’s been a good trip! I’m looking forward to visiting again in summer or spring some time, especially to see more of Scotland’s highlands.

In Oban, I met a german couple, Stefan and Sabine. I’ve been traveling around Mull with them which has been great. Stefan turns out to be a Subversion and OpenBSD developer, small world!

We are going to stay here another night, we’re at the Rockcliff B&B in Tobemory with the great hosts Donna and Pattrick, an English couple.

Here’s a picture of the coastal scenery!

Edinburgh has been great fun, it’s a really interesting city and has a lot going on. It’s the second largest city in the United Kingdom after London, but all of the neighborhoods make it feel like a small city when you’re walking around. The history here is fantastic, and I’ve really enjoyed learning about what I can while I’m here – it’s all new to me and there’s lots to take in!

My stay at the Abbey Hotel was good, it’s up a hill a bit but it’s centrally located between the old and new towns of Edinburgh.

I met some great people while I was here, Jim, a fellow from Musselburgh was very kind and invited me to come along with him and two of his other friends last night to The Stand Comedy Club – that was great fun, stand up comedians from Scotland and Ireland – a real local treat! Thanks to Jim and Steven for showing me around, and I’m afraid I don’t remember the other fellows name – but thanks!

Hey there!

[Arg! This Internet kiosk crashed and I lost most of this post, so I had to rewrite it again]

It’s been a while since my last post, I’ve been in London now since Sunday, and I arrived with a bit of a nasty head cold – it’s clearing up now which is good, but yesterday was mostly shot – slept in ’til 2pm!

Since London’s so pricey and I was feeling miserable, I decided to use up some of my Marriott rewards points and stay at the completely obsurd Grosvner House J.W. Marriott Hotel, it’s amazing – certainly not something I’d stay at if I were paying! I guess traveling a lot for work has it’s perks, 3 nights at a 260£/night hotel for free – great! I can’t even have their continental breakfast there – it’s 21£ for cereal and fruit!

I just got my travel arranged to go to Scotland from the great Britain/London Visitors Center, very helpful people here.

Tomorrow, Weds Jan 6: Train to Edinburgh (Have a B&B booked there for 3 nights)

Sat, Jan 9: Train to Oban

Mon, Jan 11: Ferry to isle of Mull/Iona – may spend one or two days here, likley staying a night in Mull (I think all the lodging in Iona is closed during Winter)

Tues, Jan 12: Head back to Oban/Glasgow area to catch a ferry the next day

Weds, Jan 13: Ferry to Belfast, Ireland; and bus to Dublin

Sun, Jan 17: Flight back to Seattle!

London’s been great so far (aside from my being sick), seems like a very neat, livable city. Again the metro system is great, and the people all very nice. Seeing Big Ben and the houses of Parliment is quite the thing. I’m sure I’ll make it to Buckingham Palace before I head out, and perhaps tomorrow to Stonehedge, which is a bit out of town.

Well, for today I’m headed over to Greenwich (an easy metro ride) to check out the Royal Observatory there, hang out on the prime meridian (longitude 0!) and make sure my watch’s time is set right A bit of a geeky destination, but it seems interesting to me! I’m sure I’ll be here again some day to check out everything else.

I’ll try and post again from Edinburgh! Cheers! (As they say here)

I’m in Paris now, and indeed do have a room at Grand Hôtel Lévêque on Rue Cler – it’s excellent! I’m glad I got a room here, it’s very close to everything as far as I can tell, and it seems to be a very popular part of town (lots of restaurants and cafés open late and such.)

The train ride over was great as well, it was my first time on a TGV, and they are seriously fast. Traveling at 160+MPH is quite the thing to do. I hope we can have trains like that in the U.S. sometime in the future! Quite a step up from the Talgo I took from BCN to Montpellier, and even the Teoz’ that I’ve ridden on elsewhere.

More pictures and updates tomorrow, for now I’ve had a great dinner and I’m ready for bed so I can wake up early and continue enjoying Paris tomorrow! Au revoir!

I’ve been in Marseille now for two days, and I’ll be heading off to Paris this afternoon/evening – Paris should be a real blast, especially for bringing in the New Year!

I’ve put in a request for a room at Grand Hôtel Lévêque, which is located right off of the historic Rue Cler – it’s another that comes highly recommended by Rick Steves’ books and travelers all around. Hopefully I get a room there – their website indicated “limited” availability up until the 1st, so we’ll see.

Hostels have been horribly booked for all the cities I’ve been in so far, mostly 1-2 weeks in advance. But I’ve been finding inexpensive hotels that have been working out just fine (I don’t really want to spend too much on lodging, since all I do is sleep there, it’d seem silly to.)

Well, I’ve got a bit more of Marseille to see (and more to eat!) and then I’ll be off to Paris on a TGV train, at an average of 160mph – I’m looking forward to that!

Au revoir!

I’ve added a link to the map for Marseille photos too – it’s at the bottom of the page under the “Links” section – I haven’t uploaded many photos yet, though – but enjoy anyways!

Arles is an excellent little French town, and it was a great introduction to France!

I went to Arles based mainly on a one-liner in Rick Steve’s Europe through the backdoor book, “Take a train to Arles” I think is all it said. Good enough for me! I researched it online a bit, and it looked like a neat place – roman ruins throughout a little french villa, and it’s where Van Gogh lived for a while in the later part of his life. That’s exactly what it is, and it’s quite interesting.

I arrived a bit later in the evening due to my not catching an early train from Montpellier, and I didn’t have a map – so initially I went down what seemed like a bit of a bad road (and I later realized it went in the opposite direction I wanted). Some kids asked me for money, but that’s all and I soon walked back and found my way to the city center, where I found a hotel. There were two hotels open when I arrived, one for 55€/night, and another that seemed more like just a bar – I went in to the bar looking one, told them I was interested in a room – and I was quickly given a key and told the price of 32€/night – I looked at the room, and it was reasonable enough (especially for me – I don’t need anything fancy on this trip) so I went with it. It was called “Hotel Paris / Bar Americaine”. There were no Americans there, but there were a lot of Frenchmen drinking the anise scented absinthe – hopefully they don’t go as insane as Van Gogh!

The city center is fairly small, and very walkable. I had breakfast at a great little place where it looked like a mother, father, and their son where working – they were very nice and made me feel like I knew how to speak French

There’s several points of interest to check out in Arles, a roman theatre from the first century B.C., a large roman amphitheater from 90 A.D., Van Gogh’s hospital where he did many of his paintings, the underground catacombs called the “Cryptoportico”, and many other things that I didn’t make it to, like Van Gogh’s bridge, which I would have liked to see – but it’s a bit far out from the city center.

Overall I very much liked Arles, it was a small town, with lots of friendly people and neat things to see. And excellent food! Wonderful pastries, bread, cheese, and coffee.
